Newspaper articles about the Titanic during April of 1912 reflect the chaos surrounding the tragedy. Initial accounts of the sinking of the RMS Titanic started out positive, such as the headline in the Syracuse Herald on April 15, 1912, which reads "Titanic's Passengers All Rescued." Unfortunately, the reports were based on speculation and the facts surrounding the sinking of the Titanic were far worse than imagined.

The Titanic set sail from Southampton, England, on April 10, 1912, with more than 2,200 passengers and crew. The passenger list contained prominent names such as John Jacob Astor, Isidor Straus, Mrs. J. "Molly" Brown and Benjamin Guggenheim. The Titanic was the greatest ocean liner ever constructed and at the time the largest moveable object in the world. The ship contained services many guests didn't even have in their homes, such as electric lights and heat in every room. The ship featured four restaurants, a fully stocked gymnasium, a swimming pool, a Turkish bath and two separate musical ensembles to entertain guests. However, late in the evening on April 14, all of that came to an abrupt and tragic end.

At 11:40 PM, an iceberg was spotted 500 yards off the Titanic's port bow. While the officer on deck made immediate efforts to steer clear of the iceberg the Titanic still struck it, gashing a 300-feet-long hole into the ship. Most of the passengers on the ship didn't notice the impact, yet the forward compartments immediately began taking on water. The events of the next three hours would result in the greatest maritime disaster in history.
